AMD unveils Helion rack for agentic AI, launch set for November

AMD unveiled its open agentic AI infrastructure rack design, AMD Helion, on Oct. 12 local time. The company said Helion applies AMD computing technology to Open Compute Project (OCP) specification designs and follows the design direction of its AMD Helios rack-scale solution. AMD said the system can be configured for different workloads, including CPU-only and all-in-one racks, and can support various cooling methods and open software. Several partners said they plan to support Helion, with a November launch planned.

Nvidia graphics processing units have become a key resource for AI infrastructure, pushing companies to change how they procure computing capacity. Firms are expanding beyond reliance on large cloud providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, using neocloud specialists, online marketplaces, direct equipment purchases and customer-supplied hardware models. Demand continues to outstrip supply, and providers and customers are multiplying even as prices rise and prepayments and long-term contracts add to procurement costs.

Microsoft turns Windows into \'agent OS\', targets developers with local AI

Microsoft is speeding up work to turn Windows 11 into an operating system centered on AI agents. At a Windows and Surface event, it laid out a “hybrid intelligence” approach that supports free local models running on PCs instead of cloud models. It showcased GitHub Copilot coding without cloud token costs and strengthened Windows-Copilot integration. Surface Laptop Ultra, starting at $2,599, uses Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip to run large models locally.
