Why Steve Jobs and IBM\'s alliance of the century fell apart at the last minute

The collapse of a planned alliance between IBM and NeXT, founded by Steve Jobs after he was forced out of Apple in 1985, is widely known. The deal would have had IBM license NeXTSTEP for its PCs and engineering workstations. Author Brent Schlender wrote that Jobs’ inflexibility helped unravel the talks. A book recounts IBM’s preparations and a planned $30 million payment. The agreement fell apart after Jobs failed to show up for a Dallas presentation.

OpenAI tops Anthropic in paid AI spending across 47 U.S. states

OpenAI outpaced Anthropic in U.S. consumer spending on paid AI services in 47 of 50 states, based on an analysis of credit and debit card payments from June to August by YipitData. Anthropic led in California, Massachusetts and Montana, and Claude spending was also higher in Washington, D.C. The data exclude free users and may not fully capture corporate spending. a16z said the figures do not represent total revenue.

Akamai signs $11.6 billion computing supply deal with Anthropic

Akamai Technologies has signed a contract to supply Anthropic with $11.6 billion of computing capacity over seven years. Akamai shares rose more than 20 percent in after-hours trading after the announcement. The deal focuses on CPU-centric workloads and will use Akamai Cloud’s distributed network. Anthropic can commit up to an additional $9 billion, lifting the deal to about $20 billion, and received warrants convertible into up to about 5 percent of Akamai common shares.
