Akamai Technologies has signed a deal to supply Anthropic with $11.6 billion of computing capacity over seven years.

Akamai shares jumped more than 20 percent in after-hours trading immediately after the announcement.

A SiliconANGLE report on Sept. 24 said the deal is focused on CPU-centric workloads. Akamai will provide computing capacity to Anthropic through the Akamai Cloud distributed network, which consists of thousands of locations worldwide.

Anthropic can commit up to an additional $9 billion, which would expand the deal to about $20 billion.

Anthropic also secured an option to acquire a stake in Akamai. Under the deal, Anthropic received warrants that can be converted into up to about 5 percent of Akamai common shares.

Akamai co-founder and CEO Tom Leighton said Anthropic chose Akamai after assessing its ability to build and operate large-scale AI infrastructure.

The partnership is not the first between the two companies. In May, Akamai disclosed in its first-quarter earnings release that it had signed a seven-year, $1.8 billion deal with an unnamed frontier model company. Bloomberg reported the next day that the customer was Anthropic.

Anthropic has been working with multiple suppliers this year to secure computing resources. In July, it signed a 20-year lease with TeraWulf to secure about 401 megawatts at the Hosville data centre in Kentucky. In June, it signed a memory and storage supply contract with Micron.
