The agentic AI era is approaching, with AI moving into smartphone chips so tasks can be handled without sending personal data to external data centres. A 72-hour test used a Galaxy S26 Ultra locked in airplane mode to gauge how well the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5th generation NPU, QMX and GPU handled daily, business-trip and weekend scenarios. Simple and multi-step AI tasks produced minimal heat, while video codec workloads raised temperatures the most.

Qualcomm says AI is new UI, steps up full-stack on-device AI push
Qualcomm said AI will become the new user interface as it expands its on-device AI strategy from smartphones into PCs. The company set out three requirements for on-device AI: fast response, privacy protection and power efficiency, and highlighted its Hexagon NPU. It also described a three-layer approach spanning SoC, operating system and apps, and said more than 100 NPU-optimised apps are available. Qualcomm also detailed its co-design partnership with Samsung and unveiled Korean retail and IT partners for its PC push.

Qualcomm unveils AI-enabled Snapdragon Wear Elite, Samsung and Google adoption possible
Qualcomm has unveiled Snapdragon Wear Elite, a next-generation wearable processor aimed at boosting on-device AI and power efficiency. Built on a 3-nanometre process, it brings the Elite brand to wearables for the first time and supports Android, Wear OS and Linux. The chip combines low-power AI and a Hexagon NPU that supports large language models. Qualcomm said battery life and connectivity options can improve. Google, Samsung and Motorola may adopt it.
