[Maui, United States=Digital Today reporter Dae-geon Seok] Qualcomm has released two flagship mobile platforms in a single generation at the same time. The pair consists of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for the top-end specification, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, which uses the same process and the same family of CPU, GPU and NPU to distribute those capabilities more broadly. Qualcomm judged it is difficult to cover an increasingly diverse smartphone market with a single top-end platform. It plans to use the two platforms to extend agentic AI features to more premium devices.

Qualcomm is changing how it supplies premium smartphones by unveiling two versions of the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform at the same time. Chris Patrick (크리스 패트릭), Qualcomm senior vice president and head of the mobile handsets unit, said in a keynote at Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui, Hawaii, on Sept. 22 local time, "The flagship category that once was one has changed into a portfolio of broad premium experiences." He added, "We redesigned the flagship system to increase customer flexibility and expand innovation across the ecosystem." He explained that consumers can now choose from base and ultra models to camera- and gaming-focused models, and from flip, fold and tri-fold devices, while product visions differ clearly by brand.

Qualcomm split its flagship platform into two types to match the change. Patrick said, "One specification no longer defines flagship," adding, "Leadership needs more than one path." Qualcomm calls it a multi-flagship strategy. It supplies different flagship platforms together so customers can choose a platform that fits their product direction. Patrick said this will expand the flagship smartphone experience to more devices and consumers across the Android ecosystem.

It is also why Qualcomm has positioned smartphones as the central device for agentic AI. Patrick said the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 provides three things needed for an agent: "presence" that stays with the user all day, "context" that understands the user's daily life and surroundings, and "connection" that links other devices and apps and the cloud. He stressed that mobile will also be where information collected by PC, XR, audio and wearable devices converges, saying, "Mobile will be at the center of all of that."

The roles performed by the two platforms are also split. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is a top-end platform designed for AI workloads, and it is pitching agentic AI, AI-based gaming, APV (Advanced Professional Video) and an AI-based camera applying intelligent pixel control as new features. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 uses the same process and includes an Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU to broaden Extreme's AI, gaming, imaging and connectivity capabilities.

The two platforms are set to be installed in flagship devices from major global OEMs and smartphone brands. Patrick said, "The two platforms deliver an agentic AI experience that is immediate, personalized and evolves to match the user." He added that the multi-flagship strategy "provides the latest AI innovations to a broader set of premium devices," and said, "If we refined smartphones over the past 10 years, we will reinvent smartphones over the next 10 years."
