Science ministry opens Gyeongnam, Jeonbuk AX R&D bid to step up physical AI megaproject
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency said they will accept applications through July 28 for the 2026 Gyeongnam and Jeonbuk AI transformation R&D programme. The physical AI project will run from 2026 to 2030 with 1.41 trillion won in total funding, split between Gyeongnam and Jeonbuk. The plan includes regional briefings and a selection process through August.

South Korea\'s cable TV system operators urged the government to ease their broadcast development fund burden, stressing local channels\' role as public infrastructure. At a seminar at the National Assembly on June 30, speakers said local channels provide closely targeted reporting, election coverage and disaster broadcasting. Researchers presented a hyperlocal media index and said cable channels in South Gyeongsang and Ulsan outperformed terrestrial and private broadcasters in local coverage. Regulators said more discussion is needed.

LG Electronics signs deal to build used refrigerant recycling, refurbished product system
LG Electronics will recover and recycle used refrigerants generated from home appliances and move ahead with a pilot for its refurbished products business. The company said it signed an agreement in Seoul with the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Korea Environment Corporation, among others. LG Electronics plans to raise annual refrigerant recovery to 81 tonnes by 2030 and use purified recycled refrigerant for new products and after-sales service.
