U.S. to spend $5.25 billion on grid upgrades in 26 states, target 23 GW added capacity

The U.S. government will pursue power grid upgrades worth $5.25 billion across 26 states to meet surging electricity demand, with the federal government covering $1.9 billion. The Energy Department selected 31 projects under its SPARK program, with utilities, cooperatives and state agencies funding $3.35 billion. The plan includes rebuilding more than 1,500 miles of transmission lines and applying performance technologies across about 21,000 miles to add over 23 GW of capacity.
