Key specifications for an "Xbox Elite Controller 3," believed to be Microsoft’s next premium gamepad, have leaked. Unlike existing models that have been criticised for stick drift, it may adopt Hall effect and TMR sticks and advanced haptics, raising interest among gamers.

Engadget reported on Oct. 6 that the information emerged through a Reddit user’s post analysing the backend of Microsoft’s Xbox Design Lab. The leaked product’s codename was shown as "Edessa" and appeared to be linked to an accessory or customisation product called "Beatrice". The Design Lab backend was said to include configuration records and 16 actual 3D part models.

The biggest change cited is the analog sticks. The Elite Series 2 used potentiometer-based sticks, but the next model may use Hall effect or TMR sticks. Both technologies detect stick movement using magnetic fields and could help reduce drift that has repeatedly affected conventional analog sticks.

Haptics are also expected to be upgraded. The leak showed a VCA motor for advanced haptics. This raises the possibility of voice-coil-based haptics and trigger vibration instead of typical vibration motors. Some observers also say that, if implemented, it could provide detailed feedback at a level similar to the PlayStation 5 DualSense.

Customisation options also appear set to expand significantly. The leaked materials included a performance directional pad, a dedicated audio scroll wheel, various faceplates, low-friction, low-noise sticks and additional paddles. The number of options for combining toppers and paddles was reported to be 27.

The directional pad was said to come in standard and cross-shaped versions, as well as a design with improved grip. The paddles were also said to be divided into standard, classic and double-width versions. The product may come in 4 SKUs, including "Elite Complete" and "Elite Base," with detailed models split depending on whether a motor is included.

The leaked information is difficult to treat as official specifications. The original source files can no longer be checked, and some Reddit users questioned whether Microsoft would adopt Hall effect sticks that reduce drift. Some also pointed out that it may not include a gyro sensor.

The launch timing has also not been confirmed. Leaks and signs of physical sales linked to a product believed to be a next-generation Xbox controller have continued, prompting speculation that a new product unveiling is nearing, but Microsoft has yet to make any official announcement.

If the product is released as described in the leak, it is expected to differentiate itself from the existing Elite Series with Hall effect and TMR sticks, upgraded haptics and sharply expanded customisation options. Still, the final specifications, product name and release schedule will need to be confirmed through Microsoft’s official announcement.
