[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Electric bicycle maker Burchda has launched the Y3 AWD, a high-output electric bicycle with separate motors on the front and rear wheels. It targets the off-road market for rough surfaces such as sand, snow and mud, highlighting up to 5,000W of peak output and a pedal-assist range of up to 100 miles (about 161 km).

CleanTechnica, an electric vehicle outlet, reported on Monday local time that the biggest feature of the Y3 AWD is its all-wheel-drive (AWD) system based on dual motors on the front and rear wheels.

It has a 1,500W rated motor on the front and another 1,500W rated motor on the rear. Using both motors together can deliver peak output of up to 5,000W. Maximum torque is listed at 210 Nm.

Burchda explained that the dual-motor system is more advantageous than a single-motor setup in securing traction in low-grip environments such as sand, snow and mud. The key is improving driving performance by distributing power to the front and rear wheels on steep climbs or rough roads.

It uses a removable 52V 30Ah battery. The company lists a maximum pedal-assist range of 100 miles, equivalent to about 161 km. Top speed is 40 miles per hour (about 64 km per hour), and it can climb slopes of up to 35 degrees, Burchda said.

The frame is also focused on off-road riding. It uses a full-suspension design with hydraulic disc brakes and 26×4.0-inch fat tires. It has a single-shoulder fork in front and a multi-link spring suspension in the rear. The combination is designed to absorb shocks on trails or unpaved roads and improve stability.

Burchda is promoting the Y3 AWD as an electric bicycle that can be used in a range of environments including sand, snow and mud. It especially stressed that with the front and rear motors operating at the same time, it can provide higher traction than single-motor products on rough roads and uphill sections.

It also has load-carrying capability. It is designed to support up to 400 pounds (about 181 kg) and can be used for outdoor activities such as long-distance travel or camping by using a rear rack and panniers. In the U.S. market, it offers free shipping and a 2-year warranty.

Price competitiveness is also a key selling point for the Y3 AWD. It is currently priced at $1,199, and Burchda is highlighting what it calls a relatively accessible price point among electric bicycles with high-output dual motors and long-range performance. The strategy is to broaden the customer base by combining high output, long range and off-road performance in one product while lowering the price burden.

The performance figures presented for the product may vary depending on real-world riding conditions. In particular, the maximum 100-mile range is based on pedal-assist conditions, and actual range can vary with rider weight, road conditions, speed, slope and temperature.
