The iPhone 18 Pro series may be thicker and heavier than its predecessor. It has also been forecast that black-toned colors could be excluded, fueling interest in design changes for the new products due in the second half of the year.
NineToFiveMac reported on July 9 that conflicting forecasts continue over the iPhone 18 Pro lineup’s thickness, weight and colors.
The first focus is thickness. Fixed Focus Digital, a Weibo-based leaker, claimed the iPhone 18 Pro lineup could be about 2 mm thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro. If that is correct, the new products would be about 10.75 mm thick, given that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are each 8.75 mm thick.
Estimates on thickness remain divided. Ice Universe said this week the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be about 9 mm thick. Macworld, however, reported the iPhone 18 Pro body would remain 8.75 mm thick, with the camera bump becoming thicker instead. That leaves competing claims that either the body will get thicker or only the camera protrusion will grow.
A possible weight increase has also been raised. Instant Digital forecast the iPhone 18 Pro Max could weigh about 240 grams. Ice Universe cited the same figure. By comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max weighs 233 grams and the iPhone 16 Pro Max weighs 227 grams. No specific weight figure has yet emerged for the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, but it is also expected to be heavier. The iPhone 17 Pro weighs 206 grams.
Color changes are also in focus. The iPhone 17 Pro was released in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver, and it did not include black or dark gray tones. At the time, some consumers reacted that it was disappointing there was no black or dark gray color.
Early forecasts suggested the iPhone 18 Pro could come in four colors: Dark Cherry, Light Blue, Silver and Black. But a new forecast this week listed only three colors: Dark Cherry, Light Blue and Silver. If that is correct, the pro lineup would exclude a black model for a second straight year.
These changes go beyond a simple exterior difference and are tied to how users experience the device. If the body becomes thicker or the camera protrusion grows, it could affect grip and portability. Increased weight is also a sensitive factor for users of large-screen models. Because the color lineup directly affects buying decisions, whether a black model remains is expected to be a key point to watch until launch.
All details so far are based on multiple leakers and outside observations. In particular, competing views remain over whether it could become about 2 mm thicker or whether the body thickness will not change and only the camera bump will grow thicker. Apple’s actual direction will need confirmation until an official announcement.
Ultimately, the core of the iPhone 18 Pro design change is how it adjusts the camera and product configuration while accepting thicker and heavier hardware. With speculation also building over the exclusion of black, exterior changes are increasingly likely to become a consumer yardstick ahead of performance for this pro lineup.
