U.S. allows private firms to join offensive cyber operations for first time

The U.S. government has for the first time allowed some private companies to take part in offensive cyber operations targeting international criminal groups and hackers. The White House said it will use private-sector capabilities to counter cyber threats aimed at Americans, including ransomware and financial fraud. Participating firms may conduct surveillance and disruption activities but are not allowed to carry out retaliation hacking independently. Operations must be overseen by the federal government and approved by Justice and Homeland Security officials.
