Cardano has launched its first on-chain inter-blockchain communication (IBC) connection with layer-1 blockchain Injective on a testnet.

On Aug. 4 local time, blockchain media outlet The Crypto Basic reported that this is the first time Cardano has connected to another blockchain via a live on-chain IBC rail.

Under the current testnet integration, users can send ADA from Cardano to Injective and move INJ from Injective to Cardano. The Cardano Foundation and Injective defined the development as the start of a "new era of interoperability" between the two networks.

Both sides also made clear it is still at an experimental stage. The current version supports only Cardano Preprod and the Injective testnet, and handles only test tokens with no real value.

The implementation is closer to a proof of concept than a commercial bridge. Under the IBC protocol structure, once a transfer begins from Cardano, ADA is locked in escrow on the Cardano side and Injective issues a corresponding IBC voucher. When returning assets, Injective burns the voucher and releases the original ADA from escrow on Cardano. It processes two-way transfers without duplicating issuance of the underlying asset.

The testnet launch shows Cardano's long-term interoperability strategy moving from the concept stage to actual implementation. Cardano first disclosed its IBC integration plan in June 2024 and presented a vision of connecting with more than 115 blockchains. This connection is the first live case under that plan.

It is also meaningful technically. Injective is based on the Cosmos SDK and supports IBC by default, but Cardano had to build separate infrastructure. Developers created a dedicated module to align differences between Cardano's extended UTXO (eUTXO)-based accounting model and Injective's account-based structure. That effectively made different blockchain designs capable of communicating over the IBC protocol.

Cardano and Injective said the integration could allow ADA to be used across the broader Injective ecosystem and INJ to be used on Cardano once it moves into an operating environment. Injective also said on social media, "ADA is coming to Injective, and INJ is coming to Cardano," adding that both assets will be available across both ecosystems.

Cardano is also working in parallel on connections with other chains. Charles Hoskinson (찰스 호스킨슨), Cardano's founder, announced a LayerZero integration in February 2026, and that work deployed a LayerZero endpoint smart contract on the Cardano network. Through that, Cardano also secured a foundation to connect with more than 80 blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana.

IBC and LayerZero integrations differ in direction but share the same goal. Cardano is seeking to expand decentralised applications, liquidity and access to digital assets by broadening the structure that lets it communicate with multiple ecosystems. With the current IBC link limited to a testnet, a shift into a production environment and broader support are expected to be the next points to watch.
