U.S. moves to standardise autonomous vehicle identification lights with teal external lighting

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is moving to introduce teal external lights to show when an autonomous vehicle is operating in self-driving mode. A draft proposal sets requirements for visibility from the front, sides and rear, with a minimum mounting height of 15 inches, but makes the lighting optional. The draft also includes changes to safety rules to reflect autonomous vehicle designs, including deleting a turn-signal requirement that is hard to apply to vehicles without steering wheels.

Tesla stays silent on HW3 upgrade question as unsupervised FSD row resurfaces

Tesla reignited controversy by not answering a key question from owners of vehicles with its older HW3 self-driving hardware during its 2026 third-quarter earnings call. While the company laid out a schedule for introducing unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) in customer vehicles, it offered no details on computer upgrades or compensation for existing HW3 cars. A top-ranked shareholder question on the issue went unanswered despite responses to lower-ranked queries.
