Gen Z shows clear preference for ETFs over individual stocks, keeps distance from high-risk investments

Gen Z is rapidly increasing its share of exchange-traded fund (ETF) trading over individual stocks on Binance, while showing lower trading frequency and leverage use than other age groups, Binance Research found. As of early August, ETFs accounted for 25 percent of Gen Z’s stock-related trades. The ETF share of Gen Z stock funds rose from 18.5 percent in June to 21.9 percent in July, while individual stocks fell. The tokenised stock market also continued to grow.

DeFi TVL down 38%, Layer 1 market cap down 42%; Layer 2 activity down 77%

The cryptocurrency market shrank across on-chain activity in the first half rather than seeing funds rotate into specific areas, Binance Research said. Global DeFi total value locked fell 38% to $43.4 billion and the combined market capitalisation of six major Layer 1 networks dropped 42% to $246.5 billion. General-purpose Layer 2 activity fell about 77%, while losses from 207 security incidents reached $972 million.

Bitcoin falls 32% in first half as ETFs, corporates and miners turn to selling

Bitcoin fell 32% in the first half of 2026, with key buyers from the prior rally turning into sellers, a report by Binance Research showed. It is down more than 50% from its October 2025 record high of $126,080, amid a global price “re-anchoring” and shifting expectations for Federal Reserve policy. On-chain data showed more coins in loss than profit. Spot bitcoin ETFs posted net outflows, while corporate and miner selling added to pressure.
