Science ministry holds roundtable on basic plan to foster science and technology talent
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT held a regional on-site roundtable at Yonsei University on May 13 on its fifth basic plan to foster and support science and technology talent for 2026 to 2030. The plan is a top-level statutory programme under a special law to support science and engineering. Students, postdoctoral researchers, early-career researchers and teachers attended and shared concerns across the talent pipeline.

South Korea mandates management of national research data, aiming to boost AI training and follow-on research
South Korea has set a legal basis to systematically manage research data produced through national R&D projects, aiming to improve use of data in the AI era. The Ministry of Science and ICT said a bill on managing and promoting use of national research data passed the National Assembly. R&D institutions will be required to manage data and disclose it in principle, while allowing temporary non-disclosure for reasons such as national security and trade secrets.

South Korea\'s government invested a total of 35.7 trillion won over the past five years to support the growth of about 1 million science and technology talents each year, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. The Future Talent Special Committee reviewed overall talent policy and approved a 2025 performance review draft. It also approved survey results on the domestic and overseas stay of science and engineering personnel and findings on the use of female science and technology workers in 2024.
