South Korea to expand AI foundation models tailored to industries, new tender expected in early July
South Korea will expand a programme to develop AI foundation models tailored to specific industries to bolster sector-by-sector competitiveness. The Ministry of Science and ICT is expected to launch a new tender as early as early July, with the defence industry cited as a priority field. The ministry is also considering expansion to other sectors, but specific areas and timing will depend on budget and policy priorities. South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT said it finalised its Sixth Basic Plan for Science and Technology for 2026 to 2030 after approval by the National Science and Technology Advisory Council. The plan calls for investing more than 200 trillion won in government R&D over five years and spreading an AI shift across the country. It includes securing 260,000 public-private GPUs, building a sixth supercomputer and a national AI computing centre, and focusing over 60 trillion won on 10 strategic technology fields.

Japan to invest 100 trillion won in physical AI through 2040, make humanoid robots national strategy
The Japanese government has announced a large-scale investment plan to spend a total 10.5 trillion yen, about 100 trillion won, by 2040 to foster the physical AI industry.
