Ha Jung-woo appointed vice chair of National AI Strategy Committee
Ha Jung-woo (하정우) took office on Aug. 31 as the new full-time vice chair of South Korea\'s National AI Strategy Committee. He said he would speed up the country’s three mega projects centred on semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centres, and accelerate a national AI transformation. He laid out priorities including pooling national capabilities to become a top three AI power, expanding AI use across society, and promoting “AI for everyone.”

Big tech steps up push into physical AI
Big tech companies are moving faster into so-called physical AI that applies AI in the real world, including robots, cars and drones, as they seek to secure an early lead in a market seen as smaller than chatbots for now but with high potential. Nvidia, AWS, SoftBank, Anthropic and Xpeng are among those expanding initiatives. South Korean companies and institutions are also stepping up projects, funding and partnerships, even as concerns persist about data shortages and reliability.

Kakao selected to run \'AI for Everyone\' project, beta to launch in September
Kakao will build a nationwide artificial intelligence service using KakaoTalk and phone access with 14 companies and institutions including LG Uplus. Kakao said on Aug. 28 its consortium was selected as the operator for the Ministry of Science and ICT programme supporting universal use of AI services, dubbed \"AI for Everyone\". The service will include a general chatbot, public AI agents and specialised agents, with a beta due in September and a formal launch planned this year.
