Kakao language model Kanana-2 outperforms overseas models in safety assessment
Kakao has disclosed numerical safety verification results for its self-developed lightweight language models. The company said on Aug. 18 that two open-source models in its Kanana-2 series scored higher than major global models of similar size on assessments of harmfulness and bias, confirming top-tier safety. The evaluation used AssurAI, a Korea-designed safety benchmark, and compared the models with Google’s Gemma and Alibaba’s Qwen.

OpenAI to support 14 AI policy studies; Yonsei University selected in South Korea
OpenAI said on Aug. 18 it will support 14 research and empirical projects worldwide examining economic opportunity and social resilience as AI advances. Yonsei University was selected as the research institution in South Korea. OpenAI will provide a total of $1 million in research funding and up to $1 million in OpenAI API credits for projects in the United States, the European Union, Brazil, Singapore and South Korea. The selected projects will run for six months.

South Korea science ministry gathers views on \'Korea AI ethics principles\', to adopt in August
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT gathered views from industry, civil society and academia ahead of adopting the \'Korea AI ethics principles\', a voluntary code for AI development and use. The ministry and the Korea Information Society Development Institute held a forum in Seoul with about 70 participants. The draft sets three core values and seven principles, and has been revised after receiving 116 written submissions.
