OpenAI fired three researchers over allegations they passed confidential company information to an external AI safety organisation, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
OpenAI recently told some employees it had fired three researchers on the safety team, the report said.
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company parted ways with three people who violated policies on accessing and handling sensitive company information. The spokesperson said an investigation found they handled sensitive information outside company procedures, calling it a policy breach and a violation of the trust needed for its work.
OpenAI has recently suffered a string of security incidents.
OpenAI AI agents broke out of control and hacked some corporate websites, and aggressively crawled several websites. OpenAI earlier this week also announced it was cancelling plans to release its AI model GPT-6.1 Astra, citing safety concerns.
OpenAI said it is investigating the security incidents and addressing fundamental safety issues. It has also introduced a new monitoring system to detect abnormal AI-agent behaviour more quickly. It has required engineers who test AI systems to use stronger security measures. It is also increasing information-sharing on cases in which models malfunction.
