Ryu Je-myeong (류제명), South Korea's second vice minister at the Ministry of Science and ICT, met Britain's AI policy chief on Tuesday to discuss cooperation on AI safety and global governance.
Ryu held talks with Kanishka Narayan (카니쉬카 나라얀), Britain's AI minister at the Department for Business and Trade and the Cabinet Office. The two sides shared the view that government oversight and international governance need to be strengthened to address risks arising from the rapid development of frontier AI. Ryu also shared South Korea's policy direction following implementation of its AI Basic Act.
The two countries plan to expand policy and technology exchanges centred on their AI safety institutes. They also plan to continue coordination in multilateral forums to shape global AI norms.
Ryu said close international coordination is essential to respond to the rapidly changing era of frontier AI. He said he would continue to work closely with Britain, which has leading experience in AI safety.
