Tesla range drops 52 km after switching to in-house 4680 battery cells in European Model Y
Tesla’s in-house 4680 battery cells in some European Model Y trims have been criticised for weaker performance than previous supplier batteries. Battery capacity fell versus the earlier LG Energy Solution pack, cutting WLTP range from 661 km to 609 km. Reports also cited slower fast-charging and lower energy density than Panasonic’s 2170 cells. L&F reported a sharp reduction in a cathode-material contract for 4680 batteries.

Tesla Semi begins mass production after 9 years, signalling truck market shake-up
Tesla shipped the first Semi truck from a new high-volume production line at Gigafactory Nevada, moving its long-delayed electric truck programme into commercial production. The company confirmed mass production at a dedicated 1.7 million-square-foot plant. The Semi shifts to planned output of 50,000 units a year, with 325-mile and 500-mile versions. Tesla is also expanding Megacharger sites and drawing strong early demand in California voucher applications.

Tesla to build Terafab to make its own AI chips despite zero manufacturing experience
Tesla plans to pursue Terafab, a large chip factory project aimed at producing semiconductors needed for self-driving and AI. Elon Musk said the project would begin within 7 days and is reported to target a 2-nanometre process. Skepticism is growing because Tesla has no chip manufacturing experience, and its earlier 4680 battery plan fell far short of targets. Industry figures also warn advanced chipmaking requires extreme cleanroom standards and deep expertise.
