U.S. debt tops $38.5 trillion on Bitcoin genesis day as Satoshi warning comes true

The United States government’s national debt has exceeded $38.5 trillion for the first time, coinciding with the 17th anniversary of the mining of Bitcoin’s first block. The debt clock topped about $38.5619 trillion on Jan. 3, as spending and interest costs rose. Bitcoin supporters pointed to the Genesis Block message referencing bank bailouts. Market participants and executives issued Genesis Day messages, while Bitcoin’s capped 21 million supply drew renewed attention.

MSIT to expand national nanofab integrated system to 14 institutions

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT said it will expand participating institutions in Moa Fab, a national nanofab integrated information system, to 14 from 6. Moa Fab links public nanofab facilities and supports researchers and companies throughout R&D and commercialisation, offering unified applications and management, real-time monitoring and equipment information. Eight additional institutions will join from January. The ministry said service efficiency has improved and it is also running a public-private council to strengthen semiconductor competitiveness.

Portal news fades as YouTube, short-form rise; newspaper readership hits record low

South Koreans are gradually moving their news consumption from internet portals to video platforms, a survey showed. Portal news use over the past week fell to 66.5 percent, the lowest since it was first tracked in 2017. Online video platform news use surged to 30.0 percent, with YouTube accounting for 92.2 percent. Short-form news use nearly doubled. TV news use rebounded to 81.4 percent, while newspaper readership fell to a record low 8.4 percent.
