BlackBerry, gone from smartphones, makes flashy return with software
Many people no longer remember BlackBerry, once a dominant maker of keyboard smartphones, and some ask whether it still exists. The company is no longer in the handset business and has shifted to software. Its QNX automotive software, including the ONX vehicle operating system, now accounts for about half of revenue and has helped deliver four straight profitable quarters. QNX is installed in about 275 million vehicles, the Wall Street Journal reported.

This week’s mobility news centred on Tesla, with the Semi entering full-scale mass production nine years after its unveiling and Full Self-Driving logging more than 10 billion miles. Tesla also outlined broader autonomy plans, cited data showing EV range retention after five years and signalled a shift toward AI and robotics, including Optimus production and higher 2026 capital spending. Elsewhere, GM paused next-generation electric trucks and SUVs while Volvo pushed ahead.

Moves by companies to develop software designed for AI agents, rather than people, are taking shape. AI agents have so far been trained to use software the way humans do, but some firms are building separate systems tailored to agents. Anthropic has introduced a standard to link AI systems with tools and data sources. Salesforce announced a platform that lets agents access core software directly, while others add payments infrastructure for agent shopping.
