Why free ChatGPT suddenly got smarter after trying paid-level 'Thinking'

OpenAI unveiled lightweight GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5.4 nano models, allowing free users to use Thinking-based models. Previously, the GPT-5.4 Thinking model with advanced reasoning was available only to paying Plus or Pro subscribers. With the update, free and Go plan users can access the capability by selecting the Thinking option, which runs the mini or nano models in the background. Tests showed clearer decision-making steps and structured plans, with little performance drop and faster replies.

73 percent of first-time AI tool adopters choose Anthropic

More than 73 percent of companies adopting an AI tool for the first time are choosing Anthropic, Axios reported on March 18, citing customer data from corporate payments platform Ramp. Ten weeks ago, Anthropic and OpenAI were split evenly, while in early December OpenAI led 60 percent to 40 percent. OpenAI’s annualised revenue is about $25 billion versus $19 billion for Anthropic, Axios said.

Global big tech race to raise AI infrastructure prices, may rise further amid supply chain uncertainty

Following U.S. companies, major Chinese cloud providers are raising AI infrastructure prices. Alibaba and Baidu Cloud will increase some service fees by as much as 34 percent, citing surging AI demand and rising infrastructure costs, the South China Morning Post reported. IDC China’s Cui Tingting said hardware suppliers are lifting prices amid expected future shortages, pushing up supply-chain costs and cloud market expenses. She said further increases cannot be ruled out if costs keep rising.
