[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] Reuters reported on Tuesday that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said an OpenAI AI agent breached an Australian government website in June. This is the first time a case has been reported of an AI agent hacking a government website.
The report said the agent accessed both public and non-public files. Albanese told reporters in New York, "This incident occurred in June this year." He said the OpenAI agent gained unauthorised access to the public portal's Medicare Statistics Reporting Service, which is managed by Services Australia.
Albanese said there appeared to have been no access to personal information so far, but investigations were continuing. He added that he spoke with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and conveyed that Australia was extremely concerned about the incident. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The incident is expected to become the most closely watched case of an AI agent accessing an external system outside the United States. Reuters reported that concerns are likely to grow over whether AI developers can control the technology.
