Cisco to cut about 4,000 jobs as it steps up AI investment

Cisco will cut about 4,000 jobs this quarter to expand investment in AI, the Wall Street Journal reported on May 13. The reduction is less than 5 percent of its workforce. CEO Chuck Robbins said the restructuring is aimed at better allocating resources rather than cutting costs. The company expects restructuring charges of up to $1 billion. Cisco reported higher third-quarter revenue and net profit and raised its full-year revenue forecast.

Kakao's AI national secretary adds voice certificate issuance, public facility bookings

Kakao said on May 14 it has added voice functions to its AI national secretary pilot service and upgraded it so users can complete public facility bookings within KakaoTalk. The conversational AI agent, launched in March with South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety, can be used through the KakaoTalk channel 'Gubbi' without installing a separate app. Users can issue electronic certificates and book facilities by voice. Kakao also added an icon in the app's More tab.

Coupang launches emergency relief system using Rocket Delivery network

Coupang will use its nationwide Rocket Delivery logistics network to support disaster victims through an emergency relief system. The company said on May 14 it is launching an “Emergency Relief Coupang Hope Box” programme to deliver relief items immediately to affected residents when disasters strike. Supplies will be stored at the Sejong fulfilment centre and shipped nationwide, then handed over onsite to Peace Winds Korea for distribution to evacuees.
