Silicon anodes shake up EV battery market ahead of solid-state commercialisation
The electric vehicle battery industry is focusing first on commercialising silicon anode technology rather than solid-state batteries, which are still seen as years from broad rollout. Automakers and battery companies are expanding use of silicon anodes to improve driving range and charging speed. General Motors views wider use of silicon anodes as a key short- to medium-term solution. Battery firms and EV makers cite performance gains, while efforts continue to scale production and improve cost competitiveness.

POSCO Future M secures mass production technology for silicon anode materials
POSCO Future M said on May 20 it has secured mass production technology for silicon anode materials and is pursuing commercial supply in 2028. The company said its silicon anode material can store more than four times the energy of graphite-based anodes and that it has addressed the key commercialisation challenge of volume expansion during charging and discharging with its own technology. It also said performance was confirmed under higher mixing ratios and long cycle use.

Swappable vs integrated: Humanoid battery standards race intensifies
With 2026 seen as the first year of mass production for humanoids, robot battery supply methods are splitting into two camps: swappable packs and integrated high-energy-density batteries. Forecasts see global shipments rising sharply through 2035, but limited run time makes securing operating hours a key task. Kiwoom Securities says operating environments drive the choice. Korea’s top three battery makers are preparing options including all-solid-state and high-nickel chemistries as demand grows.
