Moving fabs alone may not make South Korea\'s semiconductor relocation work, MPE ecosystem key
South Korea is pushing to disperse its semiconductor production base beyond the capital area, but simply moving fabs may deliver limited results, industry voices say. The government plans to allocate over 40 percent of its National Growth Fund to non-capital regions and offer special subsidies to relocating materials, parts and equipment firms. Officials also aim to build regional specialisation, but supply-chain depth, engineers’ response times, power costs and local settlement conditions are seen as decisive.

NIA, industry convergence ombudsman discuss AI industry regulatory reforms
The National Information Society Agency (NIA) is working with the industry convergence promotion ombudsman to hear difficulties faced by AI companies and identify tasks to improve regulations. The two bodies jointly held an AI industry convergence regulatory innovation meeting on July 16, a follow-up to an MOU signed late last year. Participants discussed regulatory and institutional obstacles and government support needs. They raised concerns about public procurement structures and discussed standardised testing and dedicated testbeds for digital-twin software.

Korea to lower public procurement barriers for AI products, support fees for vulnerable groups
South Korea will prioritise AI products and services in public procurement and allow support for AI service fees for vulnerable groups. The science ministry said revisions to an enforcement decree under the AI Basic Act passed a Cabinet meeting on July 14 and will take effect on July 21. Verified AI products will receive procurement benefits from August, including eased contract requirements and scoring incentives. The scope of AI-vulnerable groups eligible for support will expand.
