South Korea to expand AI foundation models tailored to industries, new tender expected in early July
South Korea will expand a programme to develop AI foundation models tailored to specific industries to bolster sector-by-sector competitiveness. The Ministry of Science and ICT is expected to launch a new tender as early as early July, with the defence industry cited as a priority field. The ministry is also considering expansion to other sectors, but specific areas and timing will depend on budget and policy priorities. The policy is reflected in the sixth Science and Technology Basic Plan for 2026 to 2030.

South Korea\'s Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Defence Ministry and the Korea Aerospace Administration said they will foster five new security companies valued at 1 trillion won or more and 50 innovation firms with sales of at least 100 billion won by 2030. The government plans to designate strategic areas such as drones, defence AI and semiconductors, space and cyber security. It will also revamp procurement, expand R&D funding and set up a Korea-style In-Q-Tel.

ITCEN Global ties up with BTQ on quantum security business
ITCEN Global said on Tuesday it signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with Nasdaq-listed quantum technology company BTQ Technologies to build post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum-safe security infrastructure. The two companies will jointly develop PQC, next-generation authentication technologies and quantum-safe security infrastructure and pursue commercialisation. Initial applications include financial networks, digital identity and biometric authentication, blockchain and Web3, public systems and enterprise IT infrastructure.
