U.S.-China rivalry spills into cryptocurrency with diverging strategies on bitcoin
The U.S. Department of Defense is operating bitcoin nodes to run network security tests, in its first official acknowledgement of such activity, as competition intensifies over using bitcoin as a national security asset. Admiral Samuel Paparo Jr said bitcoin is linked to national security and has cyber applications beyond its economic value. Iran, Taiwan and Russia are also considering or using bitcoin in payments or reserves. U.S.-China tensions extend to seized holdings and mining supply chains.

Apple steps up advertising push
Apple is expanding its advertising business to offset slower hardware growth as iPhone replacement cycles lengthen. It plans to introduce ads in its Maps app this summer and launch Apple Business, a platform for businesses combining ad tools, Business Insider reported. Apple aims to widen its reach into the small and midsize business ad market. Omdia estimated Apple’s ad revenue rose 15 percent last year to about $7 billion.

KuCoin appoints former LSEG executive to lead Europe, MiCA expansion
Digital asset exchange KuCoin has appointed Sabina Liu, formerly of London Stock Exchange Group, as head of its European business, Cointelegraph reported on Jan. 27. Liu previously led KuCoin\'s institutional business. She said securing a MiCA licence is an important milestone and would help KuCoin expand its position in mature financial markets. KuCoin plans to expand crypto services within MiCA rules.
