Alibaba cuts AI data centre build time to 100 days with modular Cube 5.0

Alibaba said it cut the time needed to build a large artificial intelligence data centre to 100 days by applying an in-house modular design, while also reducing construction costs by 10 percent. A report carried by Chinese media said the approach, called Cube 5.0, uses factory pre-fabrication and on-site assembly of containerised modules. Alibaba Cloud said it expects production efficiency to more than double this year and is expanding global data centre investment.

Alibaba introduces annual paid subscription for QwenWork AI assistant

Alibaba has introduced paid subscriptions for its workplace AI assistant QwenWork, adding a three-tier membership on Apple’s App Store as it tests demand for paid AI agents after offering the service free during its public test. Annual plans start at 200 yuan and rise to 1,499 yuan. The company will keep its general Qwen AI chatbot free while charging separately for agent functions, citing rising AI infrastructure and inference costs.

China\'s top AI still dependent on Nvidia as shift to domestic chips slows

Many of China’s most advanced AI models are still being trained on Nvidia chips, as local developers struggle to switch because of the cost and technical burden of moving away from Nvidia’s CUDA software ecosystem, the South China Morning Post reported. Engineers said migrating training workflows to Huawei’s Ascend platform can require extensive code rewrites and raise time and costs by at least 50 percent. The report said domestication is progressing faster in inference than in training.
