Tesla Cybercab begins wide U.S. tests as sightings spread
Tesla has begun broad testing of its autonomous robotaxi Cybercab by placing vehicles across major U.S. cities and outlying areas to gather real-world driving data. Media reports said the new self-driving vehicle has been spotted in locations with sharply different geographic conditions, including Austin, Alaska and Wichita. The largest cluster was in Austin with 34 vehicles, with smaller numbers in the San Francisco Bay Area and Chicago, and single vehicles in cities such as Washington, Buffalo and Boston.

Nebius to buy AI inference optimisation firm Eigen AI for $643 million
AI cloud platform company Nebius Group said on May 1 it will acquire AI inference and model optimisation company Eigen AI for about $643 million. The purchase price will be paid in cash and Class A shares. Eigen AI’s optimisation technology will be integrated into Nebius’ managed inference platform, Nebius Token Factory. The Eigen AI founding team is made up of alumni of MIT’s HAN Lab.

Waymo robotaxi expansion to New York falls through
Waymo\'s plan to operate robotaxis in New York has fallen through after New York Governor Kathy Hochul withdrew a proposal to amend state traffic law to allow vehicles to operate without a driver, TechCrunch reported. Current state law requires a driver to keep one hand on the steering wheel at all times. The withdrawn proposal would have barred paid service in cities with populations above 1 million and required approvals, fees and financial guarantees.
