AMD to buy inference chip startup Talas, expanding into custom AI semiconductors beyond GPUs
AMD plans to acquire AI inference chip startup Talas and integrate its chips and technology into its product roadmap to strengthen system competitiveness, including CPUs and Instinct GPUs. AMD sees growing generative AI demand making it hard for GPUs alone to meet all needs. Talas develops hardwired inference accelerators designed for specific AI models. AMD did not disclose the deal value. Talas has raised $219 million since 2023.

Infinity raises $15 million for AI inference software at $100 million valuation
AI infrastructure startup Infinity has raised $15 million in funding at a valuation of $100 million. TechCrunch reported on July 20 that the round included Touring Capital, Principal VC, and researchers from OpenAI and Anthropic. Infinity is developing software to help AI chips run AI models more easily, with kernel software positioned as a possible replacement for Nvidia CUDA. It aims to build a universal inference library.

Minimax seeks to raise $2 billion in funding
Shanghai-based AI developer Minimax is seeking to raise $2 billion, with more than half to come from issuing new shares and the rest from convertible bonds. It is also pursuing a $6.5 billion convertible bond offering maturing in 2027, allowing investors to obtain 19.4 million shares at 12.6 percent above Thursday’s close. The company’s shares fell 9.8 percent after the fundraising news.
