11 U.S. senators urge probe into Binance\'s sanctions compliance

Eleven U.S. senators have urged the government to investigate whether cryptocurrency exchange Binance violated U.S. sanctions on Iran and anti-money laundering rules, Cointelegraph reported on Feb. 28. In a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Attorney General Pamela Bondi, they called for a close review of Binance’s sanctions compliance and implementation of a 2023 agreement. The senators alleged $1.7 billion in crypto flowed to groups including the Houthis and Iran’s IRGC.

U.S. Democrats are seeking ethical safeguards in crypto market structure legislation, Cointelegraph reported on Jan. 9. Lawmakers including Senators Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego say the bill needs provisions barring public officials from profiting from the crypto industry and must prevent conflicts of interest involving government officials, including President Donald Trump. Gallego warned the bill would be difficult to pass without ethical guidelines. The CLARITY Act passed the House but is on hold in the Senate.
