South Korea launches push to localise \'world model\' core physical AI tech

South Korea is launching a project to develop domestic core technologies for physical artificial intelligence, including high-performance world models and homegrown simulators. The Ministry of Science and ICT and IITP held a kickoff briefing in Seoul on June 9. The programme will link world models, robot foundation models and simulator technology into a single demonstration system. The ministry will invest 34 billion won over two years and targets a 20 percentage-point improvement in robots’ final task success rates.

NC AI, POSCO DX to jointly develop robot foundation model

NC AI said on May 31 it signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with POSCO DX on May 29 to jointly develop a robot foundation model and cooperate on related technologies. The agreement was signed at NC AI\'s headquarters in Pangyo, Seongnam, attended by NC AI CTO Kim Min-jae (김민재) and POSCO DX Robotics Automation Center head Yoon Seok-jun (윤석준). The two companies will pursue joint RFM research and cooperate on VLA optimisation, digital twin simulation, verification, operational stabilisation and technical support.

NC AI wins national defense Physical AI project, to lead world model development

NC AI said on May 28 it was selected as the final project operator for a national R&D project ordered by the Agency for Defense Development on a Physical AI-based integrated simulator and modular robot system, in a consortium with Hyundai Rotem. The project aims to integrate control of multiple unmanned robots and build a digital twin simulator and modular robot hardware. NC AI will oversee development of a world model technology.
