Trump pressures Fed Chair Powell to step down in May, threatens dismissal

U.S. President Donald Trump said he would dismiss Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if Powell does not step down after his term ends in May. Trump called Powell incompetent in an interview and said he had considered replacing him early in his second term but did not act to avoid controversy. His remarks come as a Justice Department OSI probe examines a Fed headquarters renovation. Trump has nominated former Fed governor Kevin Warsh as Powell’s successor, with Senate confirmation under way.
