Government steps up push to foster \'NEXT\' national strategic technologies with 8.6 trillion won in R&D
South Korea has drawn up an implementation plan to secure strategic technologies through inter-ministerial cooperation. It plans to invest 8.6 trillion won in national strategic technology R&D this year and push a shift to a new strategic technology system. The Ministry of Science and ICT approved the 2026 implementation plan under the 2024-2028 basic plan, focusing on growth support, broader technology security and a mission-oriented policy system.

South Korea sets out \'K-Science\' drive as part of national R&D investment plan
South Korea has presented \'K-Science\' as one direction for its science and technology R&D policy, aiming to build a global-leading paradigm based on the country’s own data and research areas. The science ministry approved a draft 2027 national R&D investment plan that also boosts AI and strategic technology investment and calls for changes to restore the research ecosystem, including basic research support and measures to improve investment effectiveness.

NST reorganises to respond to PBS phaseout and research administration reform
South Korea\'s National Science and Technology Council (NST) said on Saturday it carried out an organisational reshuffle to respond to changes in the research environment, including the phased abolition of the project-based system (PBS) and support for research administration reform at government-funded research institutes. NST adjusted its structure, set up new units to manage strategic research across its full cycle, created AI and research administration reform teams, separated institutional evaluation functions and strengthened audit capabilities.
