Bank of England tests trade finance payments using stablecoins and digital pound

The Bank of England is testing a payments structure that uses stablecoins and a simulated digital pound in cross-border trade finance. The trial, run at its Digital Pound Lab, is designed to check whether stablecoin payments and digital pound settlement can work in a single flow. It uses no real customer funds. The central bank said the exercise does not signal future policy direction or endorse any company or product, and it has not decided whether to issue a digital pound.

HSBC enters UK digital securities sandbox after Bank of England approval

HSBC has received Bank of England approval to operate its digital asset platform, HSBC Orion, in the UK Digital Securities Sandbox. According to Cointelegraph, the platform supports the issuance, post-trade servicing and settlement of digital securities. HSBC Orion will operate as a digital securities depository within the sandbox. The platform supports bonds issued directly in digital form, including the planned UK digital gilt instrument and corporate bonds.

UK bets on digital gilts, seeks up to 33 billion pounds a year in economic gains through tokenisation

Britain could generate annual economic gains of up to 33 billion pounds by 2035 if it becomes a global leader in tokenised finance, a projection said. The UK government aims to issue its first digital gilt in 2027 and accelerate the build-out of market infrastructure linking tokenised bond issuance, trading and settlement.
