KAIST develops structure to ease electrical bottleneck in 2D semiconductors

A South Korean research team has developed a structure that could ease an “electrical bottleneck” that reduces performance and power efficiency in next-generation semiconductors. KAIST said its team built a continuous semimetal and semiconductor structure within a single thin film of platinum diselenide and created an analysis platform to directly observe current flow. The team visualized nanoscale charge movement with atomic force microscopy and verified operation by applying an electric field.

MIT unveils Fractal research OS to capture chip internal behavior

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a dedicated operating system, Fractal, to precisely analyze semiconductor internal behavior and security weaknesses. Using it, they examined security features in Apple’s M1 chip and confirmed CSV2 blocks speculative execution across privilege levels. They also found a phenomenon in which code is fetched into the instruction cache before CSV2 takes effect, potentially observable via a side channel, and identified “Phantom Speculation” in Apple silicon used in iPhones and iPads.

Curve Finance launches Llamalend v2, deploys on Optimism ahead of Ethereum mainnet

DeFi protocol Curve Finance launched Llamalend v2, an upgraded lending infrastructure, on Optimism ahead of an Ethereum mainnet deployment. The new version removes collateral pairing limits that had been restricted to crvUSD pairs and allows most assets, including Curve LP tokens, to be used as collateral and borrowable assets. Curve received a 250,000 OP token grant from the Optimism Foundation, to be distributed over about two months. Mainnet deployment is planned for the second half of this year.
