Google sends satellite carrying TPU into space; launch costs key

Google has sent a demonstration satellite carrying its TPU chip into space for the first time to test an orbital data centre concept. The Planet Labs-built satellite will check whether the TPU can operate in space, including continuous 1 kW power supply, chip cooling and errors while running models. The company’s longer-term plan envisions 81 satellites flying in formation for parallel computing, but it says the concept requires significantly lower launch costs.

Iris-based World ID can overcome limits of captchas and KYC for proof of personhood in AI era

Tools For Humanity, which develops the iris-based ID project World, said proof of personhood is becoming more important in the AI era and that World ID can overcome the limits of captchas and KYC checks. Chief Business Officer Trevor Traina said bots generate more than half of web activity and can now replicate IDs, weakening existing verification. He said the World app has nearly 40 million downloads and 18 million users verified via Orb.

AI researchers warn of \'intelligence explosion\' as \'Mythos-level\' moments could come monthly

Leading AI researchers warned that research automation at frontier AI companies could trigger abrupt performance jumps, or an “intelligence explosion.” GovAI researcher Alan Chan said automating the development of future models could create feedback loops that accelerate the next round of research. He urged imagining “Mythos-level” moments occurring monthly, not yearly. Co-authors called for closer scrutiny by policymakers and safeguards such as mandatory embedded auditors.
