South Korea to discuss future strategy on economy, society and science and technology
South Korea’s Planning and Budget Office, the National Economic Advisory Council and the National Science and Technology Advisory Council will hold a joint seminar on Sept. 16 in Seoul on a mid- to long-term national development strategy for 2045. The event will review expected technological changes over the next 20 years and their economic and social impact, and examine national tasks to help the next generation find new growth opportunities.

KRX recommends Kim Woo-chan as Kosdaq market committee chair candidate
The Korea Exchange said its Kosdaq Market Committee has recommended Kim Woo-chan, a professor at Korea University Business School, as candidate chair of the Kosdaq Market Committee. Kim is expected to be appointed at an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders on July 6. The exchange said Kim has expertise in finance and corporate governance and has held roles at governance and reform institutes. He has also worked in government and academia and holds Harvard degrees.

KOSPI hits 8,000 as debate returns over reviving financial investment income tax
With the KOSPI heating up and breaking above 8,000 intraday, debate has resurfaced over reviving South Korea’s financial investment income tax. Labour and civic groups call for normalising taxation of financial income, arguing capital income is insufficiently taxed compared with wages. President Lee Jae-myung has also raised the need to reform securities transaction and capital gains taxes. Opponents warn the tax could hurt sentiment and spur outflows, while the government has not formalised reintroduction.
