MSIT seeks to convert 8 non-capital SW-focused universities into AI-focused universities

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT said on July 2 it will announce a project to convert eight software-focused universities outside the Seoul metropolitan area into AI-focused universities. The application period runs from July 3 to Aug. 4. The government plans to support region-led AI transformation and train AI talent tailored to local industries at an early stage. An information session will be held on July 14 in Daejeon.

ETRI launches development of core 6G AI-RAN technologies

Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is moving ahead with research and development to secure core technologies for AI-RAN, an AI-based radio access network technology. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation began the AI-RAN Global Leading Project in April 2026 and designated ETRI as a national specialized research institute. The project runs to December 2030 with 47 billion won in R&D funding.

Korean AI chips speed up mass production, commercialisation as MSIT holds growth forum

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT held the K-AI Semiconductor Growth Forum in Seoul on June 4 to share results from domestic AI chip development and discuss growth strategies. About 300 people attended, including government, parliament and industry representatives. The forum presented pilot project cases and export-linked examples, and disclosed progress on the K-Perf performance benchmark. The ministry also outlined plans to expand standards, enhance testing and open a technical support centre in the first half.
