South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT on Wednesday formed a "Deepfake Response Research and Development (R&D) Working Group" to prevent and respond to deepfake 피해 and held its first meeting.

With deepfake sex crimes and fake news using artificial intelligence (AI) emerging as social problems, the government is pushing deepfake response R&D by ministry.

Participants include government bodies such as the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Broadcasting and Communications Commission, the National Police Agency and the National Forensic Service, as well as the Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the AI Safety Institute (AISI), the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), Kakao and Naver.

The meeting discussed the status of R&D projects in the deepfake field, inter-agency cooperation and ways to verify and spread research results. Participants shared cases of developing and applying deepfake detection solutions and presented proposals for using R&D results to protect victims of sex crimes and to identify manipulated and false content.

The working group will hold regular meetings every half year. It will compile views from ministries and institutions to identify technology needs in the field and reflect them in research tasks for the following year and in new projects.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and IITP will also 추진 this year a new project called the "Core Technology Development Project for Responding to Digital Deepfake Crime". It will support development of full-cycle response technologies, from conversion-suppression technology for harmful deepfake content to precise detection, support for blocking distribution, and data acquisition and verification. The project will run through 2030, with a total budget of 30 billion won.
