Financial sector hacking spreads as police open investigation after 28 attack IPs identified

Signs of hacking targeting the financial sector have spread beyond banks and secondary financial firms to internet banks and the insurance and securities industries. South Korea\'s Financial Supervisory Service identified 33 IP addresses linked to hacking attempts, or 28 excluding duplicates, and asked financial firms to block them and conduct self-checks. Police formed a dedicated team and opened a formal investigation. The government called for swift clarification of the circumstances and measures to minimise damage.

Baek Kyung-hoon says onsite probes possible based on signs of hacking alone

South Korea can now launch onsite investigations based solely on signs of hacking, even without a company report, Vice Prime Minister and Science Minister Baek Kyung-hoon (배경훈) said at a parliamentary audit on Oct. 6. He said revisions to the Information and Communications Network Act took effect on Oct. 1. The amended law creates a review committee and allows decisions on probe scope and methods. It also strengthens penalties, notification rules and security governance.

MSIT, KISA discuss follow-up cybersecurity cooperation after South Korea-Mongolia summit

The Korea Internet & Security Agency is holding a South Korea-Mongolia cybersecurity cooperation programme in Ulaanbaatar from Oct. 5 to 7 with the Ministry of Science and ICT. The two sides will share policies, technologies and response cases for critical ICT infrastructure, cyber threats tied to the spread of AI, and trends and applications of post-quantum cryptography. They will also introduce South Korean security firms’ technologies and services to Mongolian agencies and companies.
