Small game developers in South Korea falter as weak launches shake survival model
Warning signs are mounting for small and midsize game developers in South Korea, with setbacks ranging from PixelTribe’s shutdown and bankruptcy to CloverGames’ corporate bankruptcy filing and a publishing dispute between Hound13 and Webzen. The cases share a fragile business model in which early monetisation failures quickly trigger reduced operations, cash squeezes and staff departures. A tougher funding climate, higher fixed labour costs and widening AI-driven productivity gaps with large developers are also adding pressure.

Krafton CEO Kim Chang-han tops Korean games industry pay rankings
Pay disclosures for executives at major listed South Korean game companies showed Krafton CEO Kim Chang-han received 8.04 billion won last year, the highest among senior managers at leading listed game firms. NCSoft CEO Kim Taek-jin followed with 5.30 billion won. Krafton’s PUBG series chief Jang Tae-seok received 6.16 billion won. Average pay per employee was 129 million won at Krafton and 117 million won at NCSoft.

Shift Up posts record 181.1 billion won operating profit in 2025
Shift Up said on Tuesday it posted record results in 2025, with revenue of 294.2 billion won, operating profit of 181.1 billion won and net profit of 191.1 billion won. In the fourth quarter, revenue was 64.1 billion won and operating profit was 37.1 billion won. Goddess of Victory: Nikke generated 166.8 billion won in annual sales and Stellar Blade 115.8 billion won. The company said it expects growth in both key IPs to continue in 2026.
