MSIT, education ministry select four national research labs with annual 10 billion won support
South Korea has selected four university-affiliated research institutes as National Research Labs (NRL 2.0) to lead basic research. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Education Ministry said support will begin on July 1. Each lab will receive up to 10 billion won a year for up to 10 years, though 5 billion won will be provided this year for six months. Funding levels may change depending on future budgets.

South Korea steps up cross-government response to rising teen suicides with AI monitoring, stronger counseling
South Korea is pushing a cross-government package to respond to teen suicides, strengthening mental health support in and out of schools, managing harmful online information and expanding links to counseling and treatment. The Education Ministry said teen suicide deaths rose to 396 in 2025 from 273 in 2016, while psychiatric visits among those aged 0 to 19 increased to an estimated 431,000 in 2025. The plan sets targets to cut suicide rates by 2030 and 2035.

PIPC fines Interior Ministry, Rural Development Administration over personal data leaks
South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission decided on May 27 to impose fines and penalties on four public institutions and one contractor for violating the Personal Information Protection Act. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety was sanctioned over multiple leak incidents tied to Government24 services and delayed notification. The Rural Development Administration and affiliated bodies were penalised after a hacker stole about 575,000 records from a contractor’s NAS and posted them on the dark web.
