Draft enforcement decree for false, manipulated information law released; platforms like YouTube, Naver, Coupang in scope
The Broadcasting and Media Communications Commission released a draft enforcement decree for the revised Information and Communications Network Act, set to take effect on July 7. The draft would require self-regulation by platforms with 1 million or more daily active users over the prior three months and apply punitive damages to profit channels meeting specified posting, revenue and audience thresholds. It also covers open markets, delivery apps and open chat rooms.

U.S. warns EU over big tech curbs, says bloc could fall behind in AI economy
The United States has publicly pushed back against the European Union’s tougher regulation of big tech, warning it risks leaving the bloc behind in the AI economy. U.S. Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder told CNBC the EU should withdraw excessive curbs on U.S. tech giants and ease rules to access data centres and AI hardware. The EU has stepped up penalties against U.S. firms and expanded DSA enforcement.

Media integration law talks revived in South Korea
South Korea has reignited debate over a comprehensive media integration law as the Broadcasting Media Integration Commission begins work. An expert meeting discussed the need for an integrated legal framework amid rapid changes including OTT and ad-supported free streaming. Existing rules, rooted in a 2000 overhaul for terrestrial and cable TV, have been blamed for regulatory blind spots and fairness disputes. Past legislative efforts have failed, and lawmakers are expected to hold a public hearing on Jan. 26.
