The United States has publicly pushed back against the European Union's tougher regulation of big tech. U.S. Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder (앤드류 퍼즈더) told CNBC that the EU must withdraw excessive regulation of U.S. big tech companies if it wants to take part in the AI economy.

On March 27, CNBC reported that the United States warned that the EU risks falling behind in the AI economy as it opposes the bloc's big tech rules. Puzder said the EU must ease regulation to access data centres and AI hardware. He stressed that imposing large fines and tightening rules would push the EU out of the AI industry.

The EU has strengthened sanctions against U.S. big tech companies over the past year. Meta was fined $230 million and warned to withdraw its WhatsApp AI policy, while Apple was fined 500 million euros, Google 2.95 billion euros and X 120 million euros. Secretary of State Marco Rubio (마르코 루비오) criticised this as "an attack by a foreign government on U.S. technology companies."

The EU has recently expanded application of the Digital Services Act by investigating child safety issues at Snapchat. The United States is warning that such regulatory steps could weaken the EU's position in the AI economy and is pressing for rules to be eased.
