Ronin to shift from independent sidechain to Ethereum layer 2
Gaming-focused blockchain Ronin will switch from an independent sidechain to an Ethereum layer 2 after a hard fork. The shift is aimed at improving security, following a $625 million DeFi bridge hack in May 2022 when it operated as an independent sidechain. Ronin will also change its token economy, adopting a “proof-of-distribution” model to reward builders based on network contributions and reduce token inflation.

Kraken parent Payward seeks new funding at $20 billion valuation
Payward, the parent of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, is pursuing new fundraising based on a $20 billion valuation. CoinDesk reported the company has stepped up spending on mergers and acquisitions, including buying stablecoin payments firm Reeve for $600 million and digital asset derivatives platform Bitnomial for $550 million. It also bought NinjaTrader for $1.5 billion in 2025. Payward has continued IPO preparations but paused plans in March.

Elliptic raises $120 million to expand institutional crypto monitoring
London-based blockchain analytics firm Elliptic raised $120 million in a funding round involving Nasdaq Ventures and Deutsche Bank. One Peak led the round, with participation from the British Business Bank, and Elliptic was valued at $610 million. The company plans to use the funds to expand AI-based monitoring and risk analysis tools. Elliptic provides software that tracks crypto transactions and identifies wallets linked to sanctions, fraud, ransomware and illicit funds.
