Stripe will expand its stablecoin card business to more than 100 countries by the end of this year.
According to a recent CoinDesk report, Henri Stern (앙리 스턴), co-founder and CEO of crypto wallet infrastructure firm Privy, which Stripe acquired last year, oversees Stripe's stablecoin and crypto business.
Stern cited Kraken, Ramp and Moso as current customers.
Stablecoin cards are seen as a fast-growing area in a stablecoin market worth more than $300 billion. PaymentsCAN said stablecoin spending via cards last month was about $1.2 billion, about triple from a year earlier.
Stripe is using a strategy of adding stablecoins to its existing infrastructure. Stripe has issued more than 400 million cards since 2018. The stablecoin card service combines its existing card issuance business with Bridge, a stablecoin infrastructure firm it acquired for $1.1 billion in November 2024.
Companies such as Ramp can use this to issue corporate cards overseas in stablecoins without building new financial connections for each country.
Stripe is also expanding its blockchain payments business. As part of that, it is developing a payment blockchain called Tempo with Paradigm. It also made an early investment in OpenStandard, the developer of OpenUSD, a stablecoin aimed at challenging Circle's USDC and Tether's USDT.
Stripe is also considering expansion into tokenised deposits, decentralised finance (DeFi) and more digital asset payments. "Most of our work is focused on stablecoins," Stern said.
