Kakao wins government AI agent platform contract, steps up ecosystem expansion

Kakao has won a government-led project to build an AI agent platform, accelerating its push to expand its ecosystem. The company said it was selected as the operator of the AI Agent Marketplace Development Support Project overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT and managed by NIA. Run with Kakao Enterprise through December 2027, the project totals about 11 billion won in combined public and private funding.

Kakao releases lightweight AI model Kanana-2 as open source

Kakao has released four lightweight language models in its Kanana-2 series as open source on global AI platform Hugging Face, targeting on-device use such as smartphones. The company said the models deliver global-level performance in both Korean and English and outperform similar-size open-source models on major benchmarks. Kakao also applied its Korean-specialised tokenizer to boost Korean processing efficiency by more than 30 percent and introduced sliding window attention to cut memory use by up to 72.7 percent in long conversations.

Kakao to showcase \'Kanana\' at public AI expo, offer AI National Secretary trials

Kakao will take part in the 2026 Public AI Industry Expo in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province, on June 23 and 24 and operate an interactive booth. The company will showcase public-focused agent services based on its AI brand Kanana. The booth includes five zones, including Kanana in KakaoTalk, conversation and call summaries, KakaoTools, AI National Secretary and Kanana Safeguard. Visitors can try public service reservations and electronic certificate issuance in KakaoTalk.
